Reading

Welcome to our Reading page.  This year we will be working on a concept called the Daily 5 and Cafe.  Cafe is an acronym which stands for Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expanding Vocabulary.  The students will learn strategies for each category and work on individual goals to improve their reading.  Each student will have an individual goal that they will be working towards.  Some strategies will be introduced whole group at first then we will break into smaller groups to practice.  Today we introduced 2 Comprehension strategies: Check for understanding and Back up and Re-read.  When you read with your child, have them practice these strategies.  To Check for understanding, have your child tell you the who and the what on each page.  If the meaning is breaking down, have them check for understanding in the middle of the page.  Back up and Re-read is just that, backing up and re-reading the selection.

The Daily 5 includes 5 behaviors.  We will start with Read to Self.  I will introduce the other reading behaviors as the weeks go on.  Students will also work on stamina.  We want the children to be able to sustain reading for a longer period of time.  We will start with 4 minutes and work up to 30 minutes.  The Daily 5 behaviors will help students become better readers and writers.  I will send more information about the Daily 5 and Cafe home once we have it up and running in the classroom.
